Editor's Introduction

The Gauntlet

With Eric Rudolph

Editor's introduction:

Eric Rudolph is a pen name. For the sake of literary tradition, we cannot reveal the author's true identity. We have no more conspiratorial reason than that, however, since the Feds know who it is anyway.

The following story is fiction. Rough and tumble, edge-of-your-seat, betcha-can't-lay-it-down, pure fiction.

However, fiction, about the subject here, is critiqued by different rules than govern criticism of other fiction. Critics take fiction like this personally. The author and publisher of fiction like this are judged as if they had actually, personally, DONE the things in the story! The star of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, being asked in a supermarket to look at a lesion on a finger is nothing compared with the role identification that goes on when you write, or publish, fiction like this.

When you write or publish fiction like this, your very soul is judged, not just by an occasional airhead but by actual news reporters, as if you are, in actual fact, the character in your story!

At least that is what happened the last time I published fiction like this. (National news stories actually identified our Prayer & Action News as the "Army of God" magazine, and our website as the Army of God website. And of course the Army of God stands for Terrorism Headquarters.)

Seriously. If I published a rough-and-tumble about wicked men who get drunk and go on a killing spree with a hundred innocent victims, my story, or at least one just as seedy, would be sure to be made into a prime time movie and I, or a script writer just as degenerate, might win a couple of Oscars.

But when I publish a rough-and-tumble about Christians who get prepared and go assassinate a hundred corrupt abortionists, then it is not just literary critics, but news reporters, even reporters for national media whose stories wind up on page 1, who identify me, personally as the very "terrorist" they see in our characters.

Honestly, when you write fiction like this, all the rules change. Even the rules for intelligence.

But there is no fighting it. To the 90's journalistic mind, I actually am the characters in this story. All of them, probably. I can't change this perception, so I will just have to roll with it. I might as well take a plea bargain and hope for the best.

So, journalist friends, I admit it. I, David Leach, actually AM the unnamed hero of this story. And several other characters as well. And quite a number of other stories as well. You pick 'em, I'll confess 'em. There. Now that's out of the way. Now let me respond to how you are judging me.

You call me a "terrorist". You would never call an abortionist a "terrorist". Or a journalist. As you stumble through life trying to discern who the "good guys" are, don't you realize that if you completely shut, out of the picture, what God has to say about it, that your values are no greater than the next guy's, or than mine? Do you really like the idea of winding up where your values have no more weight than the values of the likes of me? Think about it!

If you don't like that idea, then your only help is to adopt values more objective, more authoritative, than the musings of individual human beings. But what is greater than human beings?

Watch out, now.

God is greater than human beings. Gotcha! You're trapped! God is the ONLY source of moral authority superior to human beings. You can't worm your way out of it! Either accept God's authority, or live with the knowledge that your values aren't any better than MINE! Ha-ha-ha-ha!

Now as I observe you writhing on the floor in agony, I must ask just one question: Do you call God a "terrorist"? Never mind. You're stuck anyway. Honor God's values, or stand defenseless before mine. Take your pick.

Next is to determine which, of the many alleged "gods" for us to choose from, is the real one? Try using science and logic, and the choice won't be hard. I'll give you just one clue for now: when people asked Buddha if there was a heaven, he said he didn't know; keep searching, as he was doing. When people asked Mohammed the way to heaven, he said he only saw it once himself, and didn't know; keep searching, as he was doing. When people asked Jesus the way to heaven, He said "I'll take you there. In fact, I'm in charge of decorating your mansions."

Let's imagine we can all come to the point where we accept the Bible's relevance to the identification of the "good guys" in the Abortion Wars. We still have, before us, the task of discerning what the Bible says about it. Christians differ about this, and quite heatedly.

But I have noticed that Biblically based criticisms of the use of force to prevent abortions is limited to emotional sound bites, while the Biblical defense of the use of force has consumed entire books, by Cathy Ramey and Michael Bray, besides many articles in Life Advocate and Prayer & Action News. Then there was the much publicized 12 or so page statement by Paul Hill.

Against force, the only arguments of any length I know of were a Baptist statement several pages long, which reads more like committee resolutions than clear arguments, which is full of platitudes, and which fails to address the justification of force that has been published. Then there is the response of Gary North to Paul Hill, much of which is about North's concept of the obedience Hill owes to the hierarchy of the denomination they belong to. I don't know how much that discussion means to Hill; it doesn't mean much to me.

I wish I had time to gather up all the Biblical discussion I have published or reviewed on the subject, and put it in order. For now, for anyone who cares, our website carries The Brockhoeft Report, and my Petition, which inquiring minds will not want to overlook.

Of course, I don't really expect journalists, as a result of this little introduction, to all of a sudden start inquiring what God says about who the good guys are: the abortionists, or those who stop them. I expect them to continue leaving God out of their thinking, and offering America instead the spoiled fruit of their own Politically Correct Commandments. But when they call abortionists "heroes" and those who stop them "terrorists", which is just the opposite of how God labels them, and then act as if their own values are more relevant than mine or yours, not to mention God's, I can't help asking them, "Oh, did God resign and you are applying for the job?"

MEN WHO TERRORIZE BY GOD'S POWER
